This test is effective because people who have untreated diabetes will have the excess sugar in their blood stream which will combine with the hemoglobin ion the blood. Sugar does not get intermingled in the hemoglobin in people who are not diabetic.
People who are overweight or have a family history of diabetes should be diligent about having an A1C test done annually. Others who experience some of the symptoms of diabetes, such as frequent urination, extreme thirst and insatiable hunger should also look into having and A1C test done. People who have these symptoms often will skip having this type of testing done if they are not overweight or if they do not have a family history of this disease.
