Food Allergies

Among the most irritating of all allergies are food allergies. These are problems that many people face in one degree or another. This is because they have developed sensitivity over time. Many people have an allergy whenever they are children as a result of exposure to food too early in life. This is why most doctors only recommend mother’s milk or the nearest equivalent for at least the first four to six months of life.

There are a variety of different allergies that you will be exposed to throughout your life. Making sure that you are getting everything that you will need to protect yourself from these allergies is highly important.

The first step in finding out whether you have allergies is to have a blood test administered. They will be able to determine whether you have allergens in your system at a higher than normal level. This will lead to an allergy test in which your skin will be exposed to a few different kinds of typical foods to see if there is a reaction.

Simply avoiding the foods that you are allergic to will help in making sure that you are getting the kind of care that you need to have. You will need to make sure that you are reading labels on food packaging very carefully. Federal law requires that those plants which use the same machinery for different kinds of foods mention things like peanuts or dairy which other foods which might not contain them might come into contact with.

Children with food allergies might be a little trickier because it is not possible to do a prick test or to test the blood for allergens. Instead, it is a simply trial by error system. If you notice a reaction to any kinds of foods, they should be limited or eliminated from the diet as quickly as possible.

If your child is crying after they eat, there is the possibility that they will be suffering from childhood GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux-disease). This can be dealt with easily by making sure that they are given mild foods including Gatorade or other kinds of drinks high in sodium.

Those who have an allergic reaction will do well to take an antihistamine as quickly as possible. If there is a peanut allergy, it might be necessary to go to the hospital to get help as this can prove fatal in many cases.
