High Cholesterol Foods

People are much more health conscious these days and keeping track of cholesterol levels is an important part of this process. It is well known that a high level of cholesterol leads to a build up of plaque in the arteries of the heart and this can result in heart trouble. Most food labels indicate the level of cholesterol content in the product but sometimes people do not know how much cholesterol is too much and which fatty foods to avoid to keep cholesterol levels in check. Here is a list of fatty foods to be aware of if you are concerned about cholesterol levels:

  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Liver
  • Oils and Butter
  • Processed Meat
  • Fast Food
  • Red Meat
  • Cheese

Everyone knows that eggs are notorious for having an abundance of cholesterol, but did you know that it is the yolk that contains the highest concentration of fat? So try egg whites for breakfast next time and consider cooking with egg whites since cakes and cookies are also cholesterol culprits especially if they are made with whole eggs. Foods such as fish are also very high in cholesterol, but this can be countered because fish contains important omega 3 content.

Liver is another one of the fatty foods to avoid if you are cholesterol conscious. For those who enjoy eating liver, be aware that your favorite chicken or beef liver usually contains more than two and a half times the amount of the daily value for cholesterol. Oils and butter are well known to have a high content of cholesterol so make sure to check the labels, because there are many options that might not taste like your favorite but will have significantly lower levels of fat. Processed meat can produce high levels of cholesterol so try to avoid bacon, sausage, salami and other processed sandwich meats.

We are so used to stopping at the local fast-food restaurant for a burger and fries but, over time, this can heighten your cholesterol level to troublesome proportions. Red meat is a well-known American favorite meal choice because, unless you are a vegetarian, who doesn’t enjoy a juicy steak or pork chop? These red meats are full of cholesterol and could be part of a balanced diet but not consumed every day. Finally, if you enjoy your favorite daily slice of cheese, it might be a good idea to curb the amount of this product you consume because it is very high in cholesterol content.

If you keep these high cholesterol foods in mind, you will be able to manage your cholesterol levels and still enjoy your favorite meals.
