What Are Some of the Symptoms a Woman May Experience During Menopause?

Menopause occurs when a woman stops having menstrual cycles. It typically occurs when a woman is between the ages of 45 and 55. However, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and certain medications may cause a woman to go into menopause early. Even though menopause is a natural event, it can cause several unpleasant symptoms. Below are some of the symptoms women often experience when they are going through menopause:

Vaginal Dryness

A woman’s estrogen levels decrease during menopause. This can lead to vaginal dryness. Vaginal dryness can cause problems with intimacy. If vaginal dryness is becoming bothersome, then you may want to consult with your physician. Your physician can prescribe a low-dose estrogen.

Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are one of the most common menopause symptoms. In fact, it is estimated that 75 to 85 percent of women have hot flashes while they are going through menopause. Hot flashes also occur as the result of decreased estrogen production. A low-dose estrogen may help you manage hot flashes. Certain blood pressure medications and antidepressants can also be used to manage hot flashes.

Decreased Sex Drive

It is common for a woman to experience a decrease in sex drive after she goes through menopause. Some women may not have any interest in sex at all. The decrease in sex drive could be caused by low estrogen levels, but it is important to note there are other things that can contribute to low libido. That is why it is a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider if you have experienced a decrease in sex drive. Your health care provider can determine if there is an underlying health problem contributing to your decreased sex drive.

Weight Gain

The hormonal changes a woman experiences during menopause can also cause her to gain weight. Researchers believe that lower estrogen levels can cause the body to retain more fat cells. Diet and exercise can help correct the metabolic changes a woman experiences after going through menopause. Your doctor can also prescribe a medication to help correct the hormonal imbalance, which can help you lose weight.

It is estimated that 20 percent of women experience depression at some point in their life. Depression is common during menopause because of the hormonal changes. Dealing with a life-changing transition like menopause can also cause a woman to feel depressed.
