Overactive Bladder Causes and Prevention
Around the world, over a million people have overactive bladders. Although frequent urges to urinate can be inconvenient, various treatment options are available.
Understanding the Bladder
The bladder is hollow and is shaped like a balloon. It is an important organ because it stores and releases urine. However, when a patient has an overactive bladder, the bladder’s basic functions are affected.
The nervous system regulates bladder control. So, if a patient has any diseases, the bladder will not function efficiently. Typically, people who have multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease usually have overactive bladders.
Basic overactive bladder symptoms include urine leakage following a cough or sneeze and the inability to hold urination. Frequent urination each day is another symptom; an overactive bladder can make patients urinate eight to 10 times each day.

Bladder training is a treatment common because patients don’t need any medications. During training, patient simply change their daily urination habits. For example, they never urinate when they feel an urge; instead, they urinate a specific times during the day. This training technique is called schedule voiding. Patients learn to control their urges by waiting and gradually increasing your urination times throughout the day.
Pelvic exercises are effective because they strengthen the muscles that manage daily urination. When patients perform Kegels, they tighten and relax the muscles that control how urination flows. In addition, by implementing biofeedback, they can easily locate the proper muscles that should be squeezed.
Anticholinergics are drugs that decrease the urge to urinate. However, these overactive bladder medications are not for everyone. People who have gastrointestinal disease, glaucoma, or urinary retention should not take the drugs.
Additional Overactive Bladder Causes and Prevention Considerations
Certain food and beverages can affect an overactive bladder. Spicy food, citrus juices and fruits, coffee, tea, alcoholic drinks, and chocolate can make symptoms worse.
Foods that contain a lot of fiber, however, are highly recommended because fiber promotes healthy bowel habits. Without fiber, constipation could occur, which will put pressure on the bladder.
