Psoriasis: Causes, Symptoms, Treatments, and Prevention

Psoriasis is a condition that causes the skin to become red and irritated. The exact causes of psoriasis are unknown, but doctors have found that this condition has a tendency to run in families. It is also more common in people who are between the ages of 15 and 45. Additionally, doctors theorize that psoriasis occurs when the immune system mistakes healthy skin cells for foreign material. Even though psoriasis pictures may suggest that this condition is contagious, a person cannot spread psoriasis to other people.

What Are Some of the Psoriasis Rash Symptoms?

Thick, silvery white patches on the skin are one of the most common psoriasis symptoms. The skin may also be itchy and red. Nail changes, scalp dandruff, and joint aches are some of the other symptoms that may be present in a person who has psoriasis.

Is Psoriasis Dangerous?

Anyone who has seen pictures of scalp psoriasis may think that it is a dangerous condition. Psoriasis is not a life-threatening condition; however, it can have a negative impact on a person’s life if it is left untreated. Arthritis, pain, and secondary skin infections are common among people who have psoriasis.

Psoriasis and Treatments

The good news is that there are a number of treatment options available for this condition. Doctors will usually recommend that the patient use a topical cream or ointment to help control the symptoms and prevent infection. The doctor may also recommend a pill or injection that affects the immune system’s response.

Phototherapy can be beneficial for treating psoriasis. It involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet lights. This treatment is effective, but it is only approved for temporary use. Ultraviolet lights have been shown to increase the risk of skin cancer. People with psoriasis are also encouraged to take a bath or shower every day.

Is It Possible to Prevent Psoriasis?

It is not possible to prevent psoriasis because the causes of it are not fully understood. People should do their best to keep their skin moist and clean so that they can reduce their risk of developing this condition. They should also make sure that they report strange symptoms to their doctor.
