One of the most rapidly growing epidemics in our country is the rise of type 1 diabetes. While this disease has become more widespread in our population, education about it is not as prevalent. Many people have several misconceptions about the causes and treatment of this disease. Learning the facts and becoming more educated about this disease is the best line of defense a person can have against the development of this life altering condition. Below are some of the facts everyone should know about this condition.

The Causes

Some of the most commonly known causes for the development of type 1 diabetes are being overweight and having a sedentary lifestyle. If you ask most people what this means they will be able to tell you it means eating more fruits and vegetables in their diets. Knowing this is not enough to help people make daily real life dietary choices to prevent this disease. This is because we live in a fast paced world where getting access to fresh fruits and vegetables at mealtime may not be easy. People need to know to look for foods with a low glycemic index which will not spike their blood sugar. Food high in protein and fiber generally meet these criteria. People also need to know to avoid foods with a high glycemic type 1 diabetes inducing food such as potatoes, pasta and white bread.


Being sedentary is a major cause of diabetes, ay people do not know why. Many people believe that they need to exercise to prevent diabetes because it helps you to maintain an ideal weight. While this is a part of the reason as to why people need to exercise, it is not the entire reason. People need to know that when they are overweight that sugar from high glycemic index foods get trapped in the muscles and converted into fat. This is because the body has more sugar than it needs to convert into energy. When this happens the body begins to lose its ability to process the sugars which causes the onset of diabetes. People need to exercise aerobically and participate in some form of resistance training daily to prevent this from happening.


When people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes they treat the disease through diet instead of taking insulin. This means they generally eat 5 to 6 small meals a day consisting of healthy type 1 diabetes food. These meals all have a set carbohydrate count which can be exceeded in order to maintain low blood sugar levels.
